Pinstripe for Firefox: Now with 20% more Macintosh

This update to the stand-alone Pinstripe theme turned out to be more of a redesign than I originally intended. Stephen Horlander sent in a cool concept for the browser tabs. Check out the etched text on the inactive tabs. You’ll see some of the other details in the screenshot below. The theme has some rough edges but should be usable. As always I appreciate your feedback.

  7. I think a true unified toolbar would be difficult to implement in XUL. Camino can do it because they use a Mac native UI. We tried to do a sort of pseudo-unified look with the gray gradient. That’s probably the best a theme can do for now.

    Nevermind 😉 I just realized I had some residual css in my userChrome that was throwing it off.

  11. Wow. I think you’re underselling yourselves with 20%! More like 80%! Seriously, this has gorgeous attention to detail – it’s everything the official mac theme for FF2 isn’t.

  15. I can ssh tunel to the Mac inside the school firewall to access internal web servers, which I can’t connect to through the normal AppleTalk server connect to run the native Firefox.app.

    ps. the right side of the comment textbox hides the last 4 characters (they do get typed in though). This is on a normal OSX Firefox. I’m guessing it’s set at a width that’s wider than the column it’s contained in. With Safari, the right half of the scrollbar is chopped off (supporting my idea).

  16. The tabs are great. Very nice. I have to say though, I have grown tired of the FF1.5 icon set and am enjoying the new icons in the default FF2.0 theme.

  17. Lordy, yes. THAT is what a 2.0 theme looks like.

    The tab overflow controls need some more definition, including a greyed end-of-the-line state for the scrollboxes–file under “rough edges.” But never mind that for now: you’ve done some very good work, so thank you.

    This looks quite good !

    I’m not so enthusiast about the blueish glare on the active tab though. Greyish would be a lot smarter.
    The use of bold font-face on the tabs is problematic. This makes East-Asian characters very hard to read.

    I think Arronax! has some serious competition here.

    PS – you shouldn’t scale this textarea’s width in ems. Part of it disappears for those older visitors who need larger font sizes.

  21. Looks great! One quibble though… when one uses ‘small icons’ in the toolbar, the gradient is not smooth into the tabs – there’s a noticeable line at the top of each tab.

    Other than that, is there an easy way to make the default buttons in FF2 not look like crap?

  22. This is indeed a huge improvement. I love the gradient in the toolbar — it’s such a small thing but it really makes a difference. And yes, those sidebars are snazzy.

    Maybe a combination of this theme with the official 2.0 theme — using the new icons (and fixing them) — could be the official Mac theme?

    I too however am seeing that odd issue with text boxes, including this box here. I wonder if it’s a theme or Firefox 2 bug?

    Small nitpick, I don’t like the ‘blue’ color of the tab text background gradient either.. would look alot more sexy grey.

  24. A bug report…
    When navigating trees (like the left pane of the DomInspector, or in the bookmarks window), a click everywhere on a row highlights the whole row. I need to double-click on the little arrow to open up the tree. This doesn’t happen with the default theme: click on the label in a row to highlight, click on the arrow to open.

    Strangely, that works fine in the sidebar (tested with the bookmarks sidebar).

  27. Showing actual inactive tabs is just a waste of precious tab space IMO. I use middle-click to close tabs so have the close box disabled too. I use UNO along with the userchrome.css bit of Arranox’s FF theme for UNO and a modified version of the old Safari Tabs userchrome hack and it works out pretty well for a unified toolbar look with more Mac-like tabs.

  36. Very nice! Personally I’d make just one change (well, two really, but they’re related). The Go and Search buttons appear greyed out, even though they’re available for use. Green for Go seems obvious enough, but I’m not sure what colour would be most appropriate for Search. Blue maybe, a la Spotlight?

    Other than that, it’s magnificent and a LOT nicer to look at than the new 2.x default theme!

  37. OK, I’ve installed this on Win (didn’t read the fine print after “requires Firefox 2.0RC1”). It looks good (except for context menus, they’re black), but it hides the menu bar. How to revert to default theme?

  38. I found out. You can revert to default by removing a line from preferences.js file under “general.skins”.

    Firefox will forget the selected skin and start with default.

    Default FF2 theme may be ugly for you OS X users, but is not so ugly in general. Apart from being in very cold appearence, I (for one) like it.

    All it needs is a little tweaking of the active tab colours.

    I tried to modify things myself, but I get errors when trying to install the modified theme.

  45. Great redesign. The only thing that has prevented my consistent use of firefox was the location of the close tab. Your version brings it much closer than 20% IMHO. I like that it gives me the safari feel/control without the brushed metal I detest. Your theme looks much cleaner, great work!

    I really like some big improvements, specially the the tab-text shadow and the changes in the download-manager
    And the focus state for the url and searchbars are great work – the code looks very difficult and now really nice – many cool new features, love it 😉

    Most of the design changes are not my taste, but i think this is not important.
    Jon Hicks has sad it already: “this has gorgeous attention to detail – it’s everything the official mac theme for FF2 isn’t.”

    Your are still the most important guy for FF theme stuff 😉

  49. I love the theme, but is there any way to reduce/remove the bluish tint on active tabs? This is the only remaining issue I have with the FF2.0 UI. Something seems very… off about the coloring.

  50. To change the color of the tabs, use your favorite extraction tool on the theme jar file (mine’s “the unarchiver”). Navigate to the global folder, find the tab graphics (you’ll know them when you see them), edit them, then highlight all the files under the folder automatically created by the unarchiver, right-click and choose to create an archive. Rename the archive from .zip to .jar and install.

    It’s a lot harder than it sounds. 😉

  53. Thank you very much. It seemed to me that the forward/back in the default theme were too small to hit and I didn’t like that the home icon looked “rusty”.

    Originally my day job was leaving me with little free time to contribute to Firefox. These days I’m not interested in participating in the closed theme design process driven by Mozilla Corp. and their contractors.

  58. _beautiful_ work, and many thanks. FF is a necessity for my job (web development), but sometimes it feels frustratingly alien on OS X. Your theme makes a big dent in this issue. (And oh my lord is the FF2 default Mac theme a big step back!)

    I hope you reconsider working with the Mozilla folks on the default Mac theme — if only so the majority of Mac FF users get the benefit of your excellent work.

    And any case — I wish you all the best. I spend a lot of my life (too much, probably) looking at the world through a browser. Your work makes it a prettier picture… 🙂

  60. I really like this theme and wish to use it as my default. Though for some reason once I install it on my PC any drop down menus such as the ones used for live RSS feed bookmarks show up in black, subsequently making them unreadable. Is this a commonly known problem with the theme? It’s so annoying because it’s a fantastic looking theme.

  61. Sickr, Pinstripe was made for a Mac. It uses some Mac-specific Mozilla css extensions. I have no plans to do a Windows port but if someone wants to try to port it to Windows I’d be glad to help.

  62. Aha thank you for clearing that up. It’s a shame that it’s only Mac-specific as I’m sure there are a number of PC owners out there who would love this theme. Hopefully someday it will make a welcome appearance.

  66. Great tab look! Any chance you bundle your efforts with the folks developing the GrApple themes to make the toolbar more Safari like? I’d think that their icons combined with your tabs would make the greatest look we ever had for a Mac browser!

  69. I like the new theme, but agree with the other posts about the blue highlight on the tabs. I also would like to see a variant without the blue/purple down state on the bookmark bar items. To be ‘savvy’ the down state should be a dark gray like the default Firefox 2 theme. The find interface however, is great. =)

  71. Actually, I’d like the opposite. I like Pinestripes’ less safari-like buttons and the awesome tabs, but I miss all the GrApple extras for the sidebar and extensions like Sage, Web Developer Toolbar, Scrapbook, etc.

    Now that GrApple seems to have discontinued their “Pro” series, in favor of the safari-like Eos, I hope a combined theme is in the cards in the near future.

  77. I have installed the Pinstripe theme on my wiondows machine but it has removed acess toall the windows for options etc.. now I can’t uninstall the theme because don’t know how to gewt to add-ons. Can anyone out there help me get back to a usable firefox?

    Just wanted to say I love this new theme. The subtle glow on the tabs is simply very nice. It’s topped only by the beauty of the sidebar–which has led me to change my browsing habits, getting rid of the “bookmarks toolbar” entirely and adding the “bookmarks sidebar” button to my toolbar so that I can see it often. Very nice.

    I was just in Thunderbird, though, and couldn’t help but think how nice the sidebar treatment would look on the “Folders” pane. Any chances of seeing a Thunderbird Pinstripe update? Might this be an update coming to Thunderbird 2.0, or are you no longer working on that theme, either? (BTW, I’ve looked and not been able to find the answer anywhere: they’re not making Qute the default Thunderbird theme for OSX, are they?)

    Finally, for all the nay-sayers who say “nay,” do you have any plans to open up the artwork changes from this update like you did back in July? http://kmgerich.com/2006/07/11/firefox-browser-ui-artwork-released/
    This move would allow people to repackage different color themes (blue, graphite, etc.) and take some of the (practically non-existent, I must admit) pressure off of you.

    jmc, I just got an email from Scott MacGregor and I will be helping out with polishing up the Thunderbird 2 theme and I’ll see if I can sneak in some upgrades like the sidebar treatment you mentioned.

    I’m also working on setting up a Wiki where people can contribute ideas, feedback and maybe even artwork and code as we develop the theme.

    You’ll want to start Firefox in Safe Mode. In the Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox folder there should be an icon named Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).

    If you don’t have such an icon, right-click on whatever Firefox icon you can find, choose properties, and change the text in the TARGET box to be this:

    “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” -safe-mode

  82. I love this theme. I would really love it if you could make a variant with tabs like those in Aronnax’s GrApple (default) theme for FF1.5.

    This was by far my favorite theme because it has the default icons which I prefer and great looking tabs. Since Aronnax is discontinuing this theme maybe you could build these tabs into your theme (please!!).

  90. Thank you for making this theme. The only thing I’m not really a big fan of is the icon in the search bar with the dark border around it. It doesn’t look Mac-like (the circle should just be a knocked-out solid gray color) and it doesn’t match the icon in the Find toolbar (which is the magnifying glass without a circle around it). And is it just me or is there a purple shade over the active tab?

  92. Dumb question: Why is this amazing theme not available through the official “Firefox add-ons” site? For most people that is their primary (or even unique) source for FF themes.

  94. My other suggestion for this theme is with the highlight color when the addressbar and search bar are in focus. All my other programs have the focus be a blue color that matches the blue of the scrollbar pill. I feel like the shade you’re using is more of a purple? Reminds of of OS 9’s folder icons. I think the blue would make it fit in with the overall OS better. And also, is there no standard for the blue background color that you use for the Find Bar and the History sidebar? I’m noticing that Mail has a different color from iTunes which has a different color than NetNewswire which has a different color from your theme (though your themes tilt more towards the purple side).

    Other than that I want to thank you again for making this theme. The more I use it the more I notice the little details, like the Find bar, that you thought through very well.

    Currently testing the new builds of CocoaFox (i.e. Firefox 3.0.1a), but your theme unfortunately won’t install on it… Is it possible for you to fix it without devoting too much time?

    I also suggested to Mozilla that they add your theme as standard for the new 3.0 releases. (Hopefully for 2.0 as well, but that probably won’t happen.)

    Start Firefox in Safe Mode (It should be in the start menu) and then disable the theme, or even uninstall it if you can.

  141. I have been hesitant to release the “Pinstripe for Windows” theme because of a single bug I have been unable to eliminate. However, since you have expressed interest, I will give you instructions to allow you to use the “Pinstripe” theme on Windows.

    Let me explain the situation to you. It is possible to install Kevin’s Pinstripe theme on any Windows Firefox installation. However three problems occurr:

    1) The menu bar is hidden.
    2) The close buttons on inactive tabs are invisible.
    3) The menus and popup menus are entirely black.

    I will show you how to fix each of these step by step.

    Prior to applying the “Pinstripe” theme, install the “Personal Menu” extension through Firefox Addons. Basically, this extension gives you buttons to access all the menus through the navigation bar instead of the menu bar. Restart Firefox.

    Install the “tab mix plus” extension. Restart Firefox. Click Tools>Tab Mix Plus Options. Click “Display.” Click the “Tab” tab. Uncheck the “Close Tab Button” checkbox. Click the “Tab Bar” tab. Check the “Close Tab Button” checkbox. Click “Apply” then click “OK.”

    Install the ChromEdit Plus Extensions from here (http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html). Restart firefox. Click Tools>ChromEdit Plus>ChromEdit.

  144. Use of Pinstripe on the trunk (Minefield) is no longer possible due to “does not provide secure updates”. Can this be fixed, I forgot how fugly the default theme (esp. tabs) is :-/
